Into the Storm

Prescott Valley Arizona Road Sign and Storm original photo by Jenise Cook

Sometimes the signs lead me into the storm.
You hold me when I lean into You
as You lead me on the right path,
shining Your light in the dark.
Gripping Your shepherd’s staff
Your voice guides me for
You are the way
and the truth;
life and
hope.

The Story Behind this Verse

My prose work, Into the Storm, is inspired by a photo I took that’s the Featured Image on this post, and which you can download for free on Pixabay.com.

The north-central highlands of Arizona possess wide open spaces where thunderstorms embellish the views with abandon. When I first opened this image on my computer I gasped, pleased at the result. I can gaze into the image for several minutes as I take in every element the photo captured.

Yesterday, as a new storm rolled into the area, I pulled up this image and asked it to speak to me. The image encouraged me to express hope in the midst of life’s storms.

Sometimes, the circumstances of life require me to walk through stormy times. I don’t like it, and yet I know that I don’t walk alone. The Lord walks with me.

Prose in Descending Syllabic Form

The form of this prose work begins with a line containing ten syllables. As you read down, each line decreases by one syllable until it ends with one syllable in the final line. Some students of literature call this a decastitch or a sonnetina. Other scholars say that’s not the name for this form.

The name doesn’t matter to me. I enjoyed the writing challenge (it is hard work, dear readers) to create this piece to go with one of my favorite photos from my personal gallery.
