I’m grieving with you
though miles may separate us
my heart breaks with yours
and my hand is reaching out
touching the sound of your tears.

The Story Behind this Verse

Grief and Loss Over Distance

When tragedy strikes and someone loses a loved one, words often fail us but we can offer our hugs. However, sharing in the grief is hardest when long distances separate family and friends. My tanka verse touches on this in a humble way.

The traditional Japanese tanka verse form is five lines with this syllabic pattern: 5-7-5-7-7.

My hope is that this tanka verse may help either you or someone you know.

Feel free to share it with others.
