Mariachi, ay Mariachi,
venga y cánteme
una canción de esperanza
y de alegría.

Mariachi, oh Mariachi,
come and sing to me

The Story Behind the Verse

I was born and raised in southern California, so I grew up surrounded by Mexican culture. When I was in elementary school, we frequently made field trips (remember those?) to Olvera Street, the founding site of El Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles. I adored Olvera Street: it’s open-air markets, restaurants, and… the music! Mariachis would stroll the streets and serenade the public. For me, it was absolute bliss!

As an Arizonan, I love Tucson’s International Mariachi Conference. Singer Linda Ronstadt’s extended family has played a large role in this festival over the years.
