He stood in the convenience store and stared as the TV above the cashiers’ counter blared news about food poisoning at the local “Chick ’n Cluck” restaurant.

The Story Behind This Story

Did you “get it”?

No?

That’s okay. This tiny story features punography, so no worries if you didn’t quite understand the ending.

Let me explain.

My husband loves puns. One day, we talked about various food poisoning episodes we’d experienced after eating restaurant meals made with chicken. Chicken and salmonella have cursed us a few times after eating out, making us quite ill.

Well, whenever hubby and I are together, our demented senses of humor show up. We bantered back and forth like vaudeville comedians, and Sam and Ella were born.

I had fun writing this tiny tale. My husband laughed when I read it to him. I submitted it to an online journal that promotes tiny stories, and…they rejected it.

Maybe I’m to blame?

Not everyone “gets” or likes puns.

For now, this rejected tiny story lives here on my Substack publication, in infamy.
