I moved like a specter through the dark parking lot, the lights of the stadium blazing behind me.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

He found my detective’s badge. His K-9 found the fentanyl.

“I’ll just keep this,” he said.

I smirked. “One of these days, Lieutenant, you’re going down.”

The Story Behind this Story

My husband has vivid early morning dreams. When he wakes up, he rushes to tell me about his dream before it quickly fades away, forever forgotten, to give me a potential story idea. The challenge is that I’m usually working on my coffee and am not awake enough to take notes (his dreams are very good stories). I swear I’m going to put a digital voice recorder on his side of the bed.

Anyway, I digress.

One morning, I got up earlier than usual to take our dog out, so the caffeine in my coffee had time to work on my brain and wake me up. When hubby woke up, I grabbed my iPhone and opened the Voice app to record his (in his words, paraphrased) “fantastic dream” that would be a terrific short story.

I loved his story. His version was longer, around 100 words. I may review the audio recording and revise this tiny story to a 100-word, or longer, version.
