Friday the 13th

Alice cringed as the black cat walked in front of her. She paused before entering the convenience store and sighed.

I don’t need any more bad luck.

A piece of paper on the sidewalk caught her eye. She gave it to the store clerk.

“Congratulations, ma’am, you’ve won the Powerball.”

The Story Behind this Story

It almost didn’t happen. Why?

I started working on a new client project the week of the deadline. (See my business site, www.RidgeViewMedia.com) In addition, I volunteer at our local public library, and had a deadline to create a Spanish-language orientation tour.

Although I had written this story the previous week to be published the following week, the submission deadline snuck up on me. As I was making a late dinner, staring at the clock to calculate three hours ahead of local time, I panicked.

Justin Deming, the ever-faithful Founder and Publisher of the former Medium publication The Friday Fix (RIP), lives three USA time zones east of me currently. At 6: 45 p.m. my time, I begged the microwave oven to heat up my husband’s plate faster than normal while I grabbed my MacBook Pro and fumbled to surf to my Medium account. Darling husband was famished. I was panicked. Would I miss the deadline? I didn’t want Justin to have to check for submissions at midnight or at dawn the next morning. He’s a husband, a father, and a teacher. He needs his sleep.

Around 5:30 a.m. his time, Justin published my story. I felt relieved and sad at the same time. Why? I usually submit my stories on Wednesdays, to give him time to review and reply, if needed. I was happy to see my story online and I felt sad Justin published it in the wee hours of his morning.

Justin took it all in stride.
