Are You Talking to Me?

“Mom, throw the ball. Please?”

Charlene sat in shock in her patio chair and stared at Reilly.

“Mom? Don’t you want to play with me?”

Charlene looked down at her drink on the side table, then at her dog. She texted her husband.

What did you put in my coffee?

The Story Behind this Story

I faced a deadline. The words for a new story hid from me like children on a playground in a game of Hide and Seek. I stared at the blank screen on my laptop. I felt panic set in.

Of course you know how this ends.

Is there more to this story?

What do I do when the cursor blinks back at me while I’m trying to come up with a new flash fiction story? I panic for a few seconds, then I take a deep breath, breathe out a prayer, and start free typing (free writing). I let the words, any words, flow out onto the screen. Silly words? Yes. Unrelated sentences? Bingo! I write anything to focus, and to quiet the panic.

The result? A calm mind, and a calm mind creates.

For this story, while I typed, a phrase came out of the recesses of my thoughts. I let my imagination run with the phrase, and an unexpected ending emerged out of the fog of my brain.

I think it’s a very fun ending. Yes, it has a twist. So far, readers are enjoying this story.
