The Western Skink
He likes to think
Of sunning himself on the rocks.
The Western Skink
He doesn’t stink
Except when he takes off his socks.

The Story behind the Verse
My friend and I first met when she moved into my childhood neighborhood. I was eight and she was seven years old. For her birthday this month, I wanted to give her a gift that was personal, and that called on my creativity over anything else. I decided to give her an eBook of stories, poems, and images.
While I was drafting the eBook’s PDF file, she sent me a text message and shared two photos. She and one of her adult daughters were walking along a nature path at a local (and beautiful) park. One of the photos is the featured image on this page: a wildlife marker set along the park’s nature path.
My muse came over me and inspired this verse (thank you!!). I swear I could not have written it all by myself, so maybe God was gracious at the time. One thing I do know: I love the rhyme; it reminds me of the many verses I read when I was very young. My friend enjoyed this verse and the unique, personal Happy Birthday eBook she opened on her special day.
What Is a Western Skink?
It’s a lizard. CaliforniaHerps.com answers the question well.
