He stood at the edge
sobbing, heaving his shoulders
as he looked straight down
into an abyss deeper,
larger, darker than his pain.
Then his cell phone beeped.
Bright light broke through from the screen.
“Charges dropped. You’re free!”

The Story Behind this Verse
Circumstances challenge us. At times, we feel we want to give up. We struggle with financial ruin, drug or alcohol addiction, toxic relationships with people we thought loved us, false accusations. You name it, people face tough circumstances.
Some give up. But, many don’t. With this tanka/haiku verse combination, I wanted to encourage readers to hang in there during the dark days and nights. I know it’s not easy; I’ve experienced a good share of hard times to the point of absolute despair.
I’m glad I didn’t give up so I could share this verse with you.
