Knew it from the start
that you would break my heart, and
I chose to love you

The Story Behind this Haiku
I wrote this on August 16, 2022, as my entry in the Haiku Challenge thread on Scribophile.com
(To learn more about the Haiku Challenge, read: Sunset Caresses on my website.)
“Knew it from the start” was the last line in the previous haiku verse. “Dang,” I thought. “Not fair.” That line (which the rules require to be the first line in my verse) stumped me. The previous poet gave me no clues, so I took a mental leap into my past.
Aahh, yes. A memory from my college days. Oh, right. Him.
I briefly dated a handsome guy who was a stereotypical “bad boy”.
I’ll leave it at that. I’m grateful there was only minimal “damage”. After the break up, I felt stupid for choosing to let him into my heart.
This happily married woman (24+ years) can look back at the 19-year-old me, and feel thankful for lessons learned, and for better choices made.
Your Turn
Do you have a story to share about something you knew from the start, but you pressed ahead anyway? Or, leave a Comment about my verse. After you read it, what did you think? How did you feel?
Thank you for reading!
