My heart is heavy.
My boots weigh my body down
hiking Yarnell Hill.
Wildland hotshot crews
have Esse Quam Videri
in sad hearts today.

The Story Behind this Verse
June 30, 2013
This is my sincere, heart-broken, and loving tribute to the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew, a municipal Type 1 crew of wildland fire fighters with the Prescott Fire Department, who tragically perished in the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona. These two haiku verses were published on June 30, 2019, by P. S. I Love You on Medium.com.
I remember almost every detail of that day. It’s still hard to talk about. And, instead of focusing on the tragedy that devastated our small, rural community in north-central Arizona, I want to focus on the bravery of these men and the difficult, risky work all wildland fire fighters do for us.
