Just my dad and me
as the boat slices water,
weaving memories.

The Story Behind this Haiku

A word prompt, “wind”, inspired this verse. I was surprised to see what came to my mind. The photo image I found fit the inspiration perfectly.

Memories of my dad. Toward the end of World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines, cruising up and down the coast of California. They saw several Japanese submarines off of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Then, they went to Yokohama after the signing of the peace treaty. After the war, he served in the Air Force. They sent him to Berlin (which later became West Berlin).

Perhaps as a result of his military service, my dad enjoyed recreational flying and yachting. He loved competing in regattas the most, in his 24-foot sailboat.

This haiku gives you a glimpse of how I felt while sailing with him.
