Ancient icons glow
golden in dark catacombs
reflecting back hope
to modern tourists wanting
more than their modern-day life.

The Story Behind this Haiku
I’m fascinated by early church history, and am learning about the catacombs in Rome. I didn’t know that burials weren’t allowed inside the city limits, and the catacombs provided burial sites for all Romans, not just those of a specific faith. For the Christian sites, the beauty of the ancient mosaics impress me, and one inspired me to compose a haiku verse.
The Good Shepherd, circa the 3rd century.
I hope you enjoyed my brief tanka verse!
Update! I’m happy to post that Agape Review | Christian Literary Journal (online) accepted and published my verse today, June 19, 2022. Their Twitter account is: @AgapeReview
