I walk into your empty room.
Your body’s impression and your scent still linger on the bed.
I caress your pillows as I had your baby curls.
When I’m ready, I’ll pull off the sheets and launder you away.
You’re at college now, but to me, you’ll always be here.

The Story Behind this Story
Today’s prompt from Justin Deming for his Twitterzine, The Friday Fix, @fix_friday is “memory”. (This tiny story originally appeared on his Medium publication on 22 August 2020.)
The image inspired this story. I follow several artists who post their works on Pixabay.com and I receive email updates almost daily. When I saw the image of this empty bed, my imagination ran wild. So many story ideas! Which one to choose? I’m in my happy place when an image grabs me and forms a story.
Many of my friends, family, and acquaintances have sent off their young adult children to start new lives. How about you?
Maybe you have a different empty nest story other than adult children.
Today is 9/11, the nineteen anniversary of the September 11th attacks in New York City. Death of a loved one certainly causes an empty bed.
