The Champion

Propelled forward from the start of the race, I fought my way to the front. I carried in me the best of past generations, the genetic strength and intelligence my family offered. The future depended solely on me.

I possessed what she, what we, needed.

I had to be first.

The Story Behind this Story

What’s this week’s story prompt from Justin Deming for his Twitterzine, The Friday Fix, @fix_friday?

Prompt: Firsts

I immediately went to Pixabay.com and searched on the keyword “first”. One image stood out from the others because it piqued my curiosity, imagination, and my funny bone. It’s the Featured Image on this post.

Of the gazillions of sperm my father contributed to my conception, I wonder about the one that was first. The one that made it. How was it different, faster, than all the rest? Why did it win the race to my mother’s egg and not a competitor?

I think that little sperm had to be tough, strong, and very self confident to swim hard and win the race. It also had to have a strong drive to live, don’t you think? Its competitors, the losers, all died.

Your Turn

How about you? Have you ever thought about that one, tiny sperm that won the race to your conception?
