The cathedral’s bells caressed Segovia’s hills, then echoed off into the Spanish countryside. Burdened with a broken heart and engagement, she stared at the brutalized crucifix inside the chapel.
“So realistic.“
Grief stricken, she turned to walk away.
“Mary.”
She gasped, turned, then looked. Hope filled her weary eyes.
“Rabboni!”

The Story Behind this Story
When I was in college and majoring in Spanish Language and Literature, I was accepted into a study-year-abroad program, destination: Spain. The country and its people enchanted me, rich in ancient — and modern — storytelling.
During a field trip in Segovia, I found myself alone as I entered a very small chapel. A life-size crucifix dominated the space. I felt overpowered by the handiwork of the craftsman who carved it centuries ago in brutal, excruciating detail. I’ve carried that “vision” inside me for decades, and now I share it with you. In the spirit of 50-word short stories, the “twisty” ending came to me, based loosely on The Passion story.
