The Story Behind this Story
Frankly, most journals and publications will outright reject an author’s story if it’s about …. the author … or, about writing.
I took a chance with this tiny story and submitted it to editor Tim’s FiftyWordStories.com No, I’m not surprised at all that he rejected this story. It’s a bit silly, but it is about me and a minor struggle I face.
My eyesight is failing. Reading paper books is a bit more difficult, and I use only my right eye to read digital books. Both my eyes have cataracts, but the one in my left eye is like a lattice fence, says my ophthalmologist. “You mean, like at Home Depot’s Garden Center?” He laughed and said, “Yep.”
As a lover of writing since I was a child, at first the news depressed me. I love reading paper books, and I miss them. My old computer glasses still help me write my electronic missives, but how long will they last? Surgery in about three-and-a-half years will take care of the cloudy lenses. So, I bide my time with updates to my prescription lenses for my daily-wear and my sunglasses.
All the above to say that this tiny story has a very personal backstory. I added humor at the end because I do believe I’ll have publishing success one day, despite my failing eyesight. I’m optimistic and am enjoying the journey.
