Edward massaged his seventy-three-year-old back as he sat in his cramped attic. When he opened the largest box, he laughed out loud.
“Grandpa?” Maddox tapped his phone and removed his earbuds. “What’s that?”
“My old vinyls and my record player.”
“Cool. Play them for me.”
Edward’s heart swelled with pride.

The Story Behind This Story
In my story “Revival”, I imagined a young grandson choosing to unplug from his digital music world for a moment to enter his grandfather’s analog world. This one choice that Maddox makes, to share in his grandfather’s youth and memories, makes Edward a very happy man.
I enjoy many aspects of technology, especially how it has made music more available to us today, no matter where we are when we pull up a favorite tune. I’ve enjoyed music from my parents’ old reel-to-reel tapes, my vinyl record albums, cassette tapes, 8-Track tapes, CDs, digital downloads to my Apple iTunes and to my mobile devices, and now my various internet streaming services (Pandora, Spotify, YouTube, etc.).
Through this evolution, I still cherish my vinyl LPs. I keep them next to my turntable and old speakers.
