The sycamore trees whispered. “Are we alone?”
“Yes,” hooted the owl. “The campground’s empty.”
The aspens quaked with delight. “Summer vacation is finally over. It’s our time, now.”
The trees uprooted themselves, ran, and jumped into the lake. They swam with abandon knowing the humans were gone for the season.

The Story Behind this Story
Every summer, people who live in Phoenix come north to either Sedona or to Flagstaff to escape the city’s high temperatures. Crowds! Traffic! But, we’re happy to share the cooler temperatures and swimming holes with our fellow Zonies.
When the visitors leave, when summer’s over and school starts, what do you think happens in empty and quiet wild places? My imagination came up with this fun scenario.
The little twist at the end reminded my husband of the Ents in LOTR.
This little story was workshopped by fellow members of Scribophile who helped me polish this piece.
