Brian hammered the For Sale By Owner sign into his front lawn. Neighbor Kevin walked over, staring at the For Sale sign in Brian’s truck’s windshield.
“Hey, Brian, what’s up?”
“Stage IV cancer diagnosis, Kevin. I’ve got about twelve months left, so I’m going to travel and live it well.”

The Story Behind the Story
The story prompt given to writers was “new life”. What came to my mind was a different view of new life with a twist. A point of view I’ve recently heard others say they’ve adopted as their own.
In our circle of humans and companion animals, cancer rises to the top of the list as a topic and a force to confront.
Some years ago, I read an article in The Wall Street Journal stating what oncologists would do if they received a cancer diagnosis. The majority said they would shutter their practices, avoid chemo and radiation, and go live life for as long as the cancer let them.
That article, plus the “new life” story prompt, inspired me to write “Brian’s Journey”.
