“Thanks for dinner.” James stood at the door as Cindy shook his hand.
She gazed over his shoulder. “Where’s kitty?”
James walked away longing to do anything for Cindy’s affections. Her cat emerged from the bushes and James rubbed the amulet in his pocket.
Leo kneaded Cindy’s lap with vigor.

The Story Behind this Story
This snarky little story is my very first foray into writing 50-word microfiction (or micro-fiction or micro fiction). It still makes me smile.
It’s a challenge to write a story in only 50 words. These tiny stories need to have a solid beginning, middle, and end just like any other work of fiction or nonfiction. The challenge is to write an ending “with a twist”. And, that’s the fun part. Sometimes we writers “nail” the twist at the end and sometimes we don’t. But, it’s a challenge we enjoy because the practice helps us focus on the essential elements of storytelling: plot or story arc.
Justin Deming, a fellow member of Scribophile, had started an online publication on the Medium.com platform, first known as The Daily Fix, then changed to The Friday Fix. He accepted my submission of “A Purr-fect Date” as one of the first stories in his publication. Thank you, Justin!
