Old Mr. Spencer adjusted the tool belt around his waist. He pounded the final nail into the plywood that covered the last store-front window. He gazed across the courthouse plaza. The stores on all four blocks wore wooden patches.

The Story Behind this Story
For this story, the prompt came from a song titled “Mainstreet” by Bob Seger. [ YouTube video ] We live in a rural, large town in north-central Arizona that has a wonderful downtown area. But, we see things changing, and not always for the better.
So far, as of this post, our downtown still has many family-owned businesses, or the lack of franchises surrounding the county courthouse plaza. We hope it stays this way.
